Yesterday at Elementary School drop off, a Kia Sorento driver though she was SO SUPER SMART and left the line of cars dropping kids off, passing everyone in the parking spots to the right of the line. Dangerous, because the parking spots are for parents that are STAYING and dropping off, and parents in the line are letting their kids out on the right side of their cars, so there should be NO traffic moving past.

Kinja'd!!!

Anyways she tried to pass me so I blocked her in and stopped for an inordinate amount of time. Made her re-think her cheating ways.

OR SO I THOUGHT.

Today, she tried the same shit, but when I go to the front of the line where the playground is and my daughter was ready to hop out, door open, the dumb lady comes driving up on my right, trying to get out ahead of me.

I told my daughter to wait, and close her door. I moved forward to cut her off. Noticed her window was down. Rolled down my right front.

“You can’t drive over there, passing everyone else dropping off kids.”

She retorted, already worked up “I already dropped mine off!”

“Doesn’t matter, STAY IN LINE, don’t skip ahead.”

At this point she’d visibly shaken, and gesturing “ALRIGHT, STOP!”

I had to let her know WHY what she was doing was dangerous “There’s kids being let out over here, they’re going to run in front of your car.”

“OKAY OKAY JUST STOP OKAY!”

She might have been a little unstable, she couldn’t even have an adult conversation. Jeez. I hate people.

I’m sure her schedule is WAY more important than everybody else’s safety.

WAY.

MORE.

IMPORTANT.

This is in the ‘burbs where half the school’s population is within walking distance so they charge extra for bussing them kids. There are three large buses that bring kids in from farther away.

didn’t you volunteer to patrol this or was that someone else? I like that you kept going with her. I don’t have kids, but I would be furious if I saw that. Looks like she’s set to run some kid over. Keep doing what you do sir

This is all too real for me. There is nothing that stresses people out like the school loading/unloading zone and no place with a higher concentration of “ im the most important” drivers.

Then what is this.

Kidding aside, I see what you mean. I believe the majority of school districts use buses; however, there are some cases where bus transportation is not available or the student lives in an area where it is not offered.

I tried. The school board is looking into changes. In the meantime nothing has been done other than some extra crosswalk safety, a map mailed out to all parents, and we got together for an advisory board and JUST ME showed up.

In the 80's, my dad was the guy who was “super important” to the point of embarrassment. He’d be the dad in a K5 blazer driving on grass or hopping a median to make it look like waiting in a line was stupid or something.. I didn’t get that from him thankfully.

I do hate when people don’t associate the dangers of vehicles around children though. The types that have to see the horrors to actually understand after it’s too late. Aka stupid.

Not defending her, but I always hated the parents that HAD to drop their kiddo off at the door... Thats not how this works.

10 fresh cars pull up to the curb, all to cars unload and let the next batch move up. NOPE MR/MS 6th car’s precious child cannot be bothered to walk to the door so we need to stop the traffic again to unload at the door infuriating cars 7, 8, 9 and 10.

At least thats how it worked at my daughters school. Ughhhh.

Reminds me of a case back in high school when some punk in a Toyota Camry tried to cut everyone (who happened to be picking up 9th graders) off just to get to the signal ahead... That had a No Turn on Red sign and took 5 minutes to change - 10 if it’s slightly damp outside, or RIP if it’s stormy.

We have a dedicated Bus Loading Zone that’s for buses and parents that cannot wait. For those that CAN wait, we have the line that drops off in front of the playground.

She should have dropped off with the buses, but on both days she got in the line for those who can wait, THEN pulled to the right to pass everyone and let her kid out where the parking spots are.

Not to add fuel to the fire, but I also saw a parent run the stop sign at the school’s exit as I was pulling in.

Good thing it was early and there wasn’t much vehicular or child-age pedestrian traffic trying to cross.

I have become that guy too, when it comes to vehicular misbehavior around my kids. My in-laws have a house on a lake with an unfortunate public dirt road between the house and the water. So when there are kids and/or dogs running around outside, they might be a few feet from the road on the beach, or the lawn, or crossing the road at any moment. My kids are pretty good about looking, but the dog isn’t. And anyway, they’re 2 and 4 and they’re not perfect.

This happens all the time, but the other day someone in a minivan from New Jersey (we’re in New Hampshire) comes down the road - mind you, it’s actually posted at 5mph - going maybe 25. My method with anyone that stupid is to walk into the road and stand there. When they slam on their brakes I stay standing in their way and gesture to the small children, then give them a ‘WTF’ look. That’s usually all it takes. Most people end up going back by at some point, it’s kind of a dead end. I reserve special wrath for those who dare speed by a second time.

We had a kindergarten aged boy get hit earlier this year. People are so focused on checking to their left when leaving the school parking lot, that she didn’t even look right when she pulled out and hit the boy. Thankfully he was ok/uninjured other than a couple of scrapes. We now have posted crosswalk guards, and the city is looking into options for increased safety, too. As far as student drop off, we have a good drive line system. It’s once people leave that driveline that they stop thinking.

I still can’t believe how hurried, and generally unsafe, parents are when dropping off their kids. That 30 extra seconds it will take you to get wherever you need to be is kinda worth it to make sure all children make it into the school without getting killed. Sheesh.

They tried to pass a multi-million dollar referendum to re-design the lot to be more like other schools in the area that have just that, but the taxpayers DGAF about schools and kids apparently.

There’s still things in the works to separate the two, but it feels to me like they’re dragging their heels. Its been this way for YEARS but its at the worst its ever been, thanks to having school staff that doesn’t seem to care as much as the ones in the past.

I miss having the old principal out there YELLING at parents who were fucking up.

To be honest, in my dealings with high school kids, they are not the problem drivers. High school kids are just inexperienced as hell, which leads to interesting times.

The parent drivers are the problem. They do everything wrong that the kids do wrong, but with an air of “I’m an adult here!” that exists only to absolve themselves of having to follow the rules.

Might be time to go talk to the school’s administrators and let them know what’s going on. Around here, there’s a teacher or coach or someone who’s always on duty before and after school making sure kids get to and from the cars safely. They’d be the ones to tell her something. Or an administrator would. If you’ve caught this woman twice and no one from the school is around to see her or try to stop her, it might be that the school is opening themselves up to a world of liability if/when she hits a kid.

There was a Parent Teacher Group meeting last night (that I missed) so hopefully they brought up parking lot plans again...

I had a lady last night leave a gas station IN A HURRY right in front of me, just to turn left not even 100ft down the road. Thankfully I was already on the brakes due to the cut off.

She threw her hands up when I honked, not sure if it was a “OH MY GOD I’M SO SORRY!” or an “AGH! I CRAPPED MY PANTS!” moment, but my horn IS loud.

The kicker? There was a car behind me, then NOTHING for miles. Two seconds of waiting could have saved her underpants.

Back when I was a sophomore in high school and my dad still had to drop me off, there was one student in a Ford Ranger that pulled a similar move and drove on the sidewalk to skip the line of cars to drop his sister off. Yes, the sidewalk where, ya know, people walk.

The first time it happened, I was about to open the passenger door and get out when I felt the need to check the mirror. I’m glad I did because the Ranger was almost to my door and passing our car at probably 10 mph. My dad was livid, and the second time he did it, he almost ripped the door off of someone’s new Escalade. My dad and the Escalade driver then got the principal and school cop involved.

He lost has parking pass for 2 weeks, maybe longer, and possibly got a ticket. Long story short, people are stupid, especially around schools.
